SEARCHING FOR WORDS OF DELIGHT
Ecclesiastes 12:10 (AR)
The Preacher searched to find words of delight, and correctly he wrote words of truth.
We don't have to go looking for words of discouragement and despair - they are constantly streaming to us in the news of tragedy, loss, and wickedness. A search, however, must be made for words of delight.
In a commentary on this verse, I read a suggestion that Solomon set up a contrast between words of delight and words of truth, as if to say that he wanted words of delight but could only find and write words of truth. I don't believe that. The words of truth are the words of delight.
The Preacher understood what he had to seek and deliver, because in the wisdom God had given him, he knew what we all need: words infused with truthful delight - words that have the power to delightfully lift our souls with the truth of God while the hard realities of life and death threaten to tear us down. This delight, however, is more than an emotional antidote against discouragement and despair, just so that we feel better. This delight is abounding, pleasurable, worshipful, devotional joy in our God, so that by His Spirit and truth in us we are better - not merely in morality but in vitality, being constantly reinvigorated: So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:16 ESV)
